The Most Beautiful Walking Streets in Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is a city that almost demands to be explored on foot. The historic district was designed around a system of squares and shaded streets that make walking feel natural, almost like the city itself is encouraging you to slow down.
Some streets feel grand and architectural, others feel quiet and residential, but together they create one of the most beautiful walking cities in America. You could spend days wandering without a destination and still stumble across something memorable.
If you’re looking for the most beautiful streets to walk while you’re in Savannah, these are the ones I always find myself returning to.
Jones Street
Jones Street is often called one of the most beautiful streets in America, and once you walk it, it’s easy to understand why.
Townhouses line the street, framed by wrought iron railings, ivy-covered walls, and live oak trees stretching overhead...I mean it's a complete dream. The entire street feels perfectly balanced. It's historic but still lived in, elegant but not overly polished.
The best way to experience Jones Street is to walk it from one end to the other, then wander into the surrounding blocks. Some of the most beautiful homes in Savannah sit just off this street, too.
It’s the kind of place where every few steps you feel the urge to stop and take a photo.
Bull Street
Bull Street runs straight through the heart of Savannah’s historic district, connecting many of the city’s most important landmarks.
Walking Bull Street gives you a natural tour of Savannah’s famous square system. You’ll pass through several beautiful squares as the street moves north and south through the city, eventually connecting Forsyth Park to the riverfront.
Along the way you’ll see historic churches, beautiful homes, museums, the shopSCAD Savannah gift shop with it's free SCADStory tour (a must!), and shaded squares where people sit and relax under the live oaks. When you're done there, head to E Shaver Books, a cozy bookstore with resident cats wandering around the shelves and sleeping on the chairs, belly up.
If it’s your first time in Savannah, this is one of the best streets to walk to understand how the city is laid out.
Gaston Street
Gaston Street runs along the northern edge of Forsyth Park, and it might be one of the most quietly beautiful streets in the city. I need you, dear reader, to know that it's my most favorite street, so if these next few paragraphs seem biased, now you know.
The homes here are large and historic, many with dramatic staircases leading up from the sidewalk and balconies overlooking the park. The views toward the park’s tree canopy make the entire street feel calm and open.
It’s especially beautiful in the morning when the light filters through the trees and the city is still waking up.
You'll also find some of the most beautiful bed and breakfasts and Airbnbs on this street, including the Bellwether House.
Whitaker Street
Whitaker Street offers a little bit of everything: historic homes, beautiful squares, and a few small shops and cafes along the way.
What makes Whitaker special is how it moves through different parts of the historic district. Some sections feel residential and quiet, while others bring you closer to the activity of downtown.
Walking Whitaker often feels like discovering a slightly less crowded version of Savannah. It also connects at Jones, and at that intersection is another one of my favorite shops, One Fish Two Fish.
Broughton Street
Broughton Street is the heart of Savannah’s shopping district, but it’s also one of the most fun streets to walk.
The historic buildings here have been beautifully preserved, and the street is filled with boutiques, cafes, and small local shops. It’s the kind of place where you plan to walk through quickly but end up spending an hour popping in and out of stores.
Two of my favorite stops here are The Paris Market, which is a stunning two-story boutique filled with home goods and gifts, and The Coffee Fox, the perfect cafe for a pick me up before you shop 'til you drop.
The Best Way to Walk Savannah
One of the best things about Savannah is that the streets naturally connect to one another through the city’s square system. You can start almost anywhere and eventually find your way somewhere beautiful.
One of my favorite simple routes is to start in Forsyth Park, walk north through the squares along Bull Street, wander over to Jones Street, and then make your way toward Broughton Street for a little shopping.
By the time you reach the river, you’ll feel like you’ve seen some of the best parts of the city.
And chances are you’ll already be planning your next walk.
