Walking Tours in Savannah That Are Worth Your Time

Savannah is one of the most walkable cities in America, and the best way to understand it is on foot. The city was designed around a system of squares and streets that make wandering feel natural, almost like the whole place was built for slow exploration. If you really want to understand Savannah, its architecture, its history, and the strange little stories tucked into its corners, then a walking tour is one of the best things you can do.

There are dozens of tours in the city, but a few stand out depending on what you’re interested in learning.

Architectural Savannah

If you love architecture, historic homes, and understanding why Savannah looks the way it does, this is one of the best tours you can take.

Architectural Tours of Savannah is led by Jonathan Stalcup, an architect who studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design. His tours walk through the Historic District while explaining how the city evolved from its earliest buildings all the way to modern preservation efforts.

What makes this tour different is that it isn’t just about pointing at buildings. Jonathan explains why certain materials were used, what architectural styles were popular in different periods, and how Savannah’s famous square layout shaped the city’s design.

It’s usually about 90 minutes long, and the groups are small, which makes it feel much more personal than a large tour.

If you’re only doing one tour in Savannah, this would be my pick.

A Classic Historic District Walking Tour

If it’s your first time in Savannah, a traditional history tour is a great way to get your bearings.

Many companies offer guided walks through the Historic District, where you’ll move from square to square while hearing stories about the founding of the city in 1733, the Civil War, and the people who shaped Savannah over the centuries. A great one to check out is Genteel and Bard's.

Tours usually cover major landmarks like:

  • Chippewa Square

  • Colonial Park Cemetery

  • historic mansions and townhouses

  • Savannah’s famous square layout

Most of these tours run about 90 minutes to two hours, which makes them easy to fit into a morning before lunch and exploring on your own.

I love doing one of these early in a trip because afterward the city makes much more sense. You start recognizing the architecture, the stories behind the buildings, and the significance of the squares you’re walking through.

Ghost and Haunted History Tours

Savannah has a reputation as one of the most haunted cities in America, so naturally ghost tours are everywhere.

Some of them lean heavily into theatrics, but others mix ghost stories with real historical events, which makes them surprisingly interesting even if you’re not especially into the paranormal. Those are the ones I love most, and no one does it better than Enocha Edenfield.

Her tours usually happen in the evening and take you through some of Savannah’s darker corners, historic cemeteries, old homes, and places tied to strange or tragic stories from the city’s past. She has tours that cater to families, and also ones that get a little darker.

Even if you’re skeptical about ghosts, walking the historic district at night while hearing the stories gives the city a completely different atmosphere.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

One of the best things about Savannah is that you don’t necessarily need a guide to enjoy a walking tour.

The historic district is filled with squares, parks, and beautiful streets that naturally connect into a perfect walking route. Some self-guided tours follow a route of seventy or more historic stops along the riverfront and downtown streets, letting you explore at your own pace.

One of my favorite simple routes is this: Start at Forsyth Park, walk north through the squares, wander over to Jones Street, and eventually make your way toward Broughton Street for shopping or coffee. By the time you reach the river, you’ll feel like you’ve seen half the city.

The Best Way to Experience Savannah

Savannah is a city that rewards people who just simply take a walk. The buildings are layered with history, the squares are full of quiet corners, and there’s always something interesting hiding just around the next block.

A good walking tour helps you see the city differently. After you take one, you’ll notice architectural details you would have missed, recognize the stories behind certain buildings, and understand why Savannah feels so distinct from other Southern cities.

And once you’ve done a tour, wandering the city on your own becomes even more fun now that you have a little extra history under your belt...and maybe some ghosts tagging along.
